Lumbar injections place anti-inflammatory medication and a small amount of anesthetic precisely where irritation is coming from in the lower back. Using live X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy), we target the epidural space around a nerve root or the small facet joints along the spine.
The visit is outpatient, the needle time is brief, and most people return to normal activity the next day.
These injections calm inflammation, reduce nerve sensitivity, and make it easier to sit, stand, walk, and sleep. They also create a “window” for physical therapy and activity work—so you can rebuild strength and mobility while pain is controlled.
If you’ve had persistent low-back or leg pain despite home care, medications, and targeted exercises—or your symptoms are limiting work, sleep, or daily activity—an injection can help break the pain-inflammation cycle. It’s also useful when we need diagnostic clarity: if pain improves after a precisely placed injection, it confirms we’re treating the right source.
(We’ll review medical history, medications like blood thinners, and special situations such as pregnancy or diabetes to make sure it’s safe and timed appropriately for you.)
At Orthopedic Spine Institute of St. Louis, we take a conservative-first approach and use imaging guidance for accuracy and safety. Your visit includes a focused exam, review of any prior imaging, and a clear discussion of options. If an injection is right for you, we’ll pair it with a simple, progressive plan—activity guidance, therapy when helpful, and follow-ups to track your progress. Our team verifies insurance up front and offers same-week appointments when possible, so you can move forward without delays.
